Grilling is one of the best ways to cook meats and all kinds of other foods. Grilling allows people to prepare all kinds of meals with less oil, water, butter and other preparatory agents. As such, in some circles, it is seen as a healthier option of food preparation. This method of cooking also offers plenty of variety. It’s hardly surprising that using a grill is a year-round option for many. Below, we look at the extra precautions needed to properly care for your grill in the winter.
Preparing Your Grill For Winter
Clean The Grill
Cleaning your grill thoroughly when winter is approaching is the first step to having it good and ready for the season and beyond. Clean off all left over food and grease thoroughly. Both the outside and inside of the grill should be thoroughly cleaned. As you clean the outside of the grill, be sure to clean the inside of the barbecue grill by removing the grates as well as the metal heat deflectors or lava rocks. Be sure to use gentle but effective cleaner. If you must use abrasive cleaners, test the same on a small part of the grill (perhaps at the back) to see if the paint will be ruined. Your grill should be cleaned after every use.
Fix Or Replace Parts
The more we use our barbecue grill, the more likely it will begin to malfunction. Wear and tear is a normal. Parts will need replacing as they get worn out and so forth. Preparing your grill for winter is a great time to replace or fix these parts to get them back into tip-top shape.
Invest In A Good Grill Cover
During the very cold winter months, storing your grill properly is of utmost importance. For starters, a good grill cover is needed. This will keep the elements – snow, rain, dirt – from adversely affecting the grill and ruining its functionality. It pays to invest in a good grill cover from the start. Forty dollars spent on a grill cover is a better investment than having to spent purchase a new grill prematurely.
Additionally, if you are reusing a grill cover, ensure there are no tears or holes that can compromise functionality and effectiveness.
Store The Grill Properly
When storing your grill during the winter months, ensure that you store it in a cool dry place. Proper storage is particularly important during the winter months. The harsh weather conditions of the winter months can often bring rust and undue wear and tear. Of course, storing your grill in an indoor space such as a garage or other store room is ideal. However, if this is not possible, a covered indoor/outdoor space such as a covered deck, patio, or screened in porch can also do the trick. The point is to not have the grill completely exposed to the elements when it is not being used during the winter months.
